From Stammersdorf to Mauer and from Nussdorf via Grinzing to Ottakring

Heuriger feeling in the city

The best views towards Vienna are from the Cobenzl, the Nussberg and the Kahlenberg. In Stammersdorf and Strebersdorf, you are sitting almost directly on the Bisamberg and in Mauer in the 23rd district, wine paradise is literally on the Heuriger’s doorstep too. Long-established and well-frequented Heurige can be found in Sievering, Grinzing and Nussdorf. And in Ottakring, you sit and drink in the city whilst at the same time virtually being in the countryside.

    Weingut Walter on the Bisamberg

Set amid the vineyards on the Bisamberg between Stammersdorf and Strebersdorf in a truly idyllic location lies the wine tavern owned by the Tyrol-born Norbert Walter. From Tyrolean house speck ham to Galtürer Enzianschnaps (a spirit distilled from the roots of gentian in Galtür) to Viennese wine: up here, you can get married (the author of this article did this herself once upon a time), hold a trade fair, watch a film outdoors or simply have a pleasant time enjoying good food and wine.

Weingut Göbel – Heuriger Helmut Krenek

They may say “Gemma zum Göbel” (Let’s go to Göbel’s), but the head chef is called Krenek and is no newcomer on the gastronomic scene. High up on the Stammersdorfer Kellergasse you’ll find regional cuisine with flair and therefore a step beyond the usual Heuriger buffet fare, and an idyllic outdoor dining area. The wine which is served with the food hails from Hans Peter Göbel.

    BioWeingut Zahel in Mauer

The Zahel wine is certified organic and is grown in Mauer (in the 23rd Viennese district), in Oberlaa and on the Nussberg. It is served in the wine tavern in Maurer Hauptplatz (Mauer’s main square), where the family-run business is proud of its home cooking, be it Buchteln (plum-filled sweet rolls) baked to a traditional family recipe, or homemade organic sourdough bread. But at the very top of the menu is Gemischter Satz.

    Sirbu am Nussberg

Oh, the view! If you manage to get a seat outside in the summer, you’ll have a view over the vineyards to the Kahlenberg and the Leopoldsberg, over Vienna in any case. The buffet is a typical Heuriger buffet. The original building of Sirbu has a long history: in the 18th century, the Stift Kremsmünster (Kremsmünster Foundation) acquired the building, and eventually in 1954 it firstly became the Römerkeller (Roman wine cellar) and then later a Heuriger.

Jutta Ambrositsch - Buschenschank in Residence in Grinzing

I muss wieder amoi in Grinzing sein” (I have to go back to Grinzing once), as the lyrics of a wine-fuelled Viennese song go. “Beim Wein, beim Wein” (With wine, with wine) - at Jutta Ambrositsch’s wine tavern, you sit in the heart of the legendary Grinzing near to Peter Alexander Platz and enjoy wines with unusual names like “Kosmopolit”, “Satellit” or “Fürchtegott” produced by the self-made winemaker, who gave up her first bread-and-butter job in 2004 to make wine. It’s only open in the summer and always gets booked up quickly!

10er Marie in Ottakring and Fuhrgassl-Huber in Neustift/Walde

Every Viennese person has heard of 10er Marie, even if they have never been there: that’s because the Heuriger is the oldest in Vienna - it has been in Alt-Ottakring since 1740 - and is now classified as a historical monument. Crown Prince Rudolf, Franz Schubert and Franz Lehár once visited here. In 1993 the establishment was taken over by Fuhrgassl-Huber from Neustift am Walde, which is also no stranger to all things Heuriger.
