Unique events in honour of Klimt

The Golden Age of Gustav Klimt

Viennese Modernism was one of the most important periods of art and culture in Austrian history. Gustav Klimt - as co-founder of the Vienna Secession - was one of the most important companions. Alongside Schiele's works, his paintings still fetch top prices at auctions and are often considered "priceless". But who was Gustav Klimt really?

MAK: "Klimt's Magic Garden" (until 7 October 2018)

A must-see! In a virtual reality show staged by Frederick Baker, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Klimt's fascinating drawings for the famous Stoclet mosaic frieze from Brussels. In a virtual garden - similar to paradise - you not only discover Klimt's unique artistry, but become part of the mosaic. Ideal as a cultural programme "in between" or in combination with a lunch at MAK's own restaurant, Salonplafond. You only need 15 minutes, including the instructions for the 3D glasses. It is best to book a time slot online!

Upper Belvedere: "Emilie Flöge. Beloved Muse." (until 29 May 2018)

In a one-person play, which is both impressive and emotional, the Austrian actress Maxi Blaha embodies the strong personality of the haute couture designer, beloved by aristocrats, but only known to many as Klimt's muse and lover. Today Emilie Flöge would be, in my opinion, equivalent to Coco Chanel in Paris. Like her French counterpart, she liberated the ladies from the tight corset and designed flowing and floor-length dresses. In the course of the play you receive a surprising insight into Klimt's life, not just his work. Emilie Flöge was also responsible for his estate.

Kunsthistorisches Museum: "Stairway to Klimt" (until 2 September 2018)

Eye to eye with Gustav Klimt! Thanks to a special bridge construction, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna brings the famous Klimt murals in the impressive staircase closer to the eye. You can see unique paintings, embedded in the pillar and arcade architecture of the stairwell, were commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Even then with surprisingly much gold. I've been there twice myself and could not stop taking pictures - really impressive! My tip for afterwards: coffee and cake under the dome of the museum.
