Christmas markets all over the country

04.11.2022

During Advent there’s nothing like a mug of hot punch with the smell of Christmas biscuits in the air! Atmospheric markets, with their pretty illuminations and seasonal music playing in the background, ensure that you can finally relax and enjoy the pre-Christmas period far away from the hectic shopping stress on the streets.

Whether it's a Christmas spectacle in Vienna, the wintery atmosphere in Salzburg, enchanting art in Graz or age-old traditions in front of the Innsbruck mountain landscape: the selection of markets that open their doors across the country from mid-November to Christmas is huge.

Advent in Vienna

Rathausplatz, Spittelberg, Schönbrunn Palace: Vienna’s Christmas markets are places that magically attract tourists and locals alike. Mulled wine and punch in trendy flavours? Check! Lovingly designed wooden toys and gaudy Santa Claus hats side by side? For sure! Fun and traditional atmosphere? Definitely! The undisputed No. 1 is and remains the Christkindlmarkt in front of the City Hall. Easy to reach from most of the Viennese Austria Trend Hotels.

Arts and crafts and Christmas kitsch, a children’s railway and singing choirs. The markets in the capital couldn’t be more different. Yet they all have one thing in common: a great atmosphere.

Winter magic in city of Mozart

Salzburg goes Christmas mode: during Advent the festively decorated city shines even brighter than usual. Instead of Mozart, the focus is now on the scary but fascinating “Perchten” processions with their costumed figures, the young trumpeters playing their fanfares from the towers and the Salzburg “Christkind” (Christ Child) with its four angels. Mulled wine and hot chestnuts will keep you warm while you discover traditional craftsmanship, Salzburg delicacies and unique handmade pieces at the wooden stalls of the Advent markets.

If you are fed up with the hustle and bustle of the Advent markets which you find in the large cities, you should go to Innsbruck as soon as possible. Because local traditions and a sense of home are still very important here! The Tyrolean markets in particular are characterised by their regional and traditional flair. You can sample punch and mulled wine to the sounds of the fanfares from the “Little Golden Roof”, smell the seductive scent of almonds and admire the Christmas tree decorations, handicrafts and woollen goods.
