Sights, shopping and excursions in Salzburg

Highlights at the city centre and the countryside surrounding it

Your next holiday is going to take you to Salzburg? The Austria Trend Hotels will be happy to accompany you. Check in at one of the three hotels and discover what makes the city of Mozart so special. Picturesque little alleys, squares with lots of history and beautiful places in nature … Welcome to Salzburg!

Shopping and sightseeing: the top locations in the city of Mozart

One thing is for certain: You can’t not visit the Old Town on a trip to Salzburg! Be it the Salzburg Cathedral, the Festspielhaus (Festival House) or Mozart’s birthplace – the city’s most important sights can all be reached on foot. And you can enjoy some breath-taking views from the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Mönchsberg or the Gaisberg. The latter can be reached easily by bus from the Mirabellplatz square.

Shopping is an important part of every city trip for you? Then you should visit the Getreidegasse or the Linzergasse. There aren’t only plenty of possibilities to shop but you can experience Salzburg’s history at the same time. For those who prefer modern architecture, the shopping centre Europark in the Taxham district is the perfect choice.

The must-sees during your stay in Salzburg

Be it culture or the arts – Salzburg is so much more than just Mozart. The gorgeous gardens at Mirabell Palace are amongst the most popular attractions for tourists. The premises of the palace along with its garden monuments have landmark status and are under preservation orders. It also belongs to the UNESCO world heritage sites as part of the “Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg”.

Not quite as central but still a true gem: the casino at the Schloss Klessheim palace. Just outside the doors of Salzburg, a building with a particular charm awaits. It offers a unique blend of baroque art, casino, event bar and restaurant. The Hangar-7 at the Salzburg Airport is another architectural masterpiece. It houses the historic airplane collection of the Flying Bulls alongside modern art and toque-awarded cuisine.

You’d like to explore the city’s surrounding areas? At the Hallein Salt Mine, you can discover the rich history of the “white gold” – an important natural resource that’s even reflected in the city’s name. You can travel back in time to 400 BC there. At this time, the Celts started mining salt in the area of today’s border between Germany and Austria. Did you know that?

Experiencing nature in a truly unique way while on a city trip to Salzburg. A cool excursion tip of the Austria Trend Hotels – in the truest sense of the word – is the Eisriesenwelt Werfen. A system of caves of more than 42 kilometres in length makes up the most extensive ice cave on the planet. For approximately 75 minutes, you get to marvel at the impressive, crystal-clear ice world – and stay cool even in summer.

Excursion destinations for the whole family in Salzburg

Fun, games and culture – all under one roof. The Toy Museum captivates children (and those that are ones at heart) and takes them into a world of fun and games. Alongside a variety of toys to look at and try, an extensive programme of creative activities awaits. Particularly recommended: the Sindri puppet theatre. Performances are not only held at the Toy Museum but also at the Stiegl brewery’s Brauwelt.

You prefer to head out into nature with your family? Then the Hellbrunn Palace is the perfect destination for you! At the park surrounding the palace, the little ones can romp around and play. The adjacent zoo is another highlight. And on hot summer days, the Hellbrunn Trick Fountains are sure to cool you down – an incredibly fun experience for all ages. In winter, the Hellbrunner Adventzauber (Christmas market) is an absolute must!

Excursions make you hungry? For a well-deserved break, the Austria Trend Hotels recommend the Sternbräu with its interactive children’s playroom. Another particularly family-friendly location is the Stadtcafé at the Haus der Natur (the museum of natural history). Alongside special children’s dishes, it’s the spacious terrace that makes a “pit-stop” there incredibly appealing.

Did you know that the Hohensalzburg Fortress offers special audio tours for children? Read up on what other hotspots in Salzburg offer for children at the blog of the Austria Trend Hotels.
