Kunsthistorisches Museum

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is presenting a retrospective exhibition of the American painter Mark Rothko (1903–1970) for the first time in Austria. The exhibition provides an overview of his most important stylistic developments, creating an exciting dialogue with the Museum’s own collections.

The painter Caravaggio and the sculptor Bernini are among the Old Masters whose popularity has never waned to this day. The groundbreaking achievements of these two artists are the focal point of the exhibition Caravaggio & Bernini, which starts on 15 October. Some sixty key works, featuring paintings and sculptures alike, will showcase the revolutionary and innovative art of the early 17th century.

Ambras Castle in Innsbruck

The provincial sovereign of Tyrol, Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-95), ordered that the mediaeval fortress at Ambras be turned into a Renaissance castle for his wife Philippine Welser. He also commissioned the building of a separately designed museum complex to house his world-famous collections. Constructed according to the most advanced ideas of its time, it is an eminent precursor of our modern-day museums and has been preserved at its original site to this day.
