On the tracks of Viennese Modernism

In 2018, Viennese Modernism is being celebrated. In memory of their most important protagonists: the painters Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, the architect Otto Wagner and the universal artist Koloman Moser, who died 100 years ago. They were pioneers in their fields and celebrated great successes. Their impressive secret: their courage to try new things, to experiment and sometimes to fail.

In 2018 the City of Vienna is dedicating an entire anniversary year to these four exceptional artists with many special exhibitions, events, even specially written plays and productions. In the foreground is the memory of a time that was wavering between "beauty and abyss" on the eve of the First World War. Absolutely worth seeing, even for non-passionate Klimt or Schiele fans. My personal recommendation: plan to visit several exhibitions so you get an interesting cross-section.

Vienna and the Fin de Siècle

At the end of the century before last, an artistic community formed in Vienna, culminating in the founding of the Vienna Secession. The goal was artistic freedom, which - away from traditional historicism - ultimately led to the development of the modern Wiener Werkstätte.
