On the tracks of Viennese Modernism

11.04.2018

In 2018, Viennese Modernism is being celebrated. In memory of their most important protagonists: the painters Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, the architect Otto Wagner and the universal artist Koloman Moser, who died 100 years ago. They were pioneers in their fields and celebrated great successes. Their impressive secret: their courage to try new things, to experiment and sometimes to fail.

In 2018 the City of Vienna is dedicating an entire anniversary year to these four exceptional artists with many special exhibitions, events, even specially written plays and productions. In the foreground is the memory of a time that was wavering between "beauty and abyss" on the eve of the First World War. Absolutely worth seeing, even for non-passionate Klimt or Schiele fans. My personal recommendation: plan to visit several exhibitions so you get an interesting cross-section.

Vienna and the Fin de Siècle

At the end of the century before last, an artistic community formed in Vienna, culminating in the founding of the Vienna Secession. The goal was artistic freedom, which - away from traditional historicism - ultimately led to the development of the modern Wiener Werkstätte.

Exhibitions in honour of Viennese Modernism

Including pieces never shown before

On the occasion of the anniversary year 2018, the most important Viennese museums are dedicating numerous (special) exhibitions to the artists of Viennese Modernism. The exhibits are mostly from the inventory of the museum itself or are precious international loans. In the first half of the year, the focus will be on the life and work of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Otto Wagner and Koloman Moser.

Vienna and Art Nouveau

Golden lustre, floral mosaics, rounded shapes and curved lines are typical features of Art Nouveau. In Austria, this style is inextricably linked to the name of Gustav Klimt, who increasingly rejected historicism which praised past epochs.

The Golden Age of Gustav Klimt

Viennese Modernism was one of the most important periods of art and culture in Austrian history. Gustav Klimt - as co-founder of the Vienna Secession - was one of the most important companions. Alongside Schiele's works, his paintings still fetch top prices at auctions and are often considered "priceless". But who was Gustav Klimt really?

Vienna and European Modernism

Otto Wagner is inevitably regarded as Vienna's most important architect in the transition from the historical to the modern means of construction. On the threshold of the 19th to the 20th century, he was the first to place emphasis on architecture which was based on the function, construction and materials of modern life.

A discovery tour of Otto Wagner’s unique style

In particular Otto Wagner’s unmistakable pavilions, originally built for Vienna’s light railway and today part of the underground lines U4 and U6, are well-known features of the city landscape. Similarly the Postsparkasse (the Austrian Post Savings Bank) or the Kirche am Steinhof are some of Vienna’s significant Art Nouveau works. Tip: take the U4 for a small voyage of discovery!
